The Ion-Insider: Who I Think Should Be In Injustice: Gods Among Us

Injustice Ion Insider

It’s no secret that I know a thing or two when it comes to comic books and super heroes, so imagine my excitement when I finally got my hands on Injustice: Gods Among Us. For those of you who don’t know Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game from NetherRealm Studios (you know those guys who made a game called Mortal Kombat) which features a roster of some of the biggest and at times least known names in the DC Comics Universe ranging from Batman and Superman to Killer Frost and Solomon Grundy. Now the reason I am writing this article is that well to be frank I know a lot of characters from both Marvel and DC and the roster while it might be impressive is lacking some key names and also have a few that I feel are definitely overstaying their welcome.

I should first note that this is an opinion piece and that everything I am saying is just my opinion and is more or less wishful thinking from a comic book collector.

With that being said my first complaint is that there are way too many damn Batman related characters in the game, we have the Dark Knight himself, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Nightwing, Catwoman, Bane, Batgirl (via DLC). The first thing most of you will say is well Solomon Grundy has been a villain to multiple heroes in DC over the years, which is true, hell if you want to get specific he was original introduced as a villain in the ‘Golden Age’ Green Lantern time. But, that is besides the point as 7 of the original 24 characters on the roster are Batman related yet they have an unknown with Killer Frost in the game and they don’t even put Firestorm the hero who she mainly fights against in the game. I’m starting to trail off here and I’ll save most of my banter about the game itself in our official review that will be posted this weekend. Below you will see my list of who I think should be in the game and hopefully (although the season pass says 4 DLC characters and we know Lobo and Batgirl are two of them) one or two may end up as DLC.

Martian Manhunter

First up we have Martian Manhunter, why he wasn’t initially included in the roster for Injustice is beyond me as he has been a pivotal character in the Justice League and he is quite badass in his own rights. I also think he would be a great character to play as given his powers and abilities, for those of you who don’t know Martian Manhunter has a wide array of powers including:  telepathy, shape-shifting, projecting energy, x-ray vision, phasing, invisibility, flight, and super strength. So you could see some interesting combos and super moves that could be included in the game for him.

Booster Gold

Next on the list we have who I think if he was included in the game would be strictly for fan service and also as the comic relief character is Booster Gold. While he is relatively unknown Booster Gold actually doesn’t have any powers, and any abilities he does have are all thanks to his suit and ‘artifacts’ he obtained in the future where he’s from to gain various abilities such as:  super strength from the his suit, wrist blasters allow him to project force blasts. Circuitry from a force field belt allows Booster to resist physical and energy attacks, infrared and magnifying vision thanks to his goggles. Booster Gold can also fly thanks to a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring. The best part about Booster Gold in a video game is thanks to him being from the future he can predict everything that is going to happen as it already has, leading to some funny and interesting dialog throughout the game.

I feel like Darkseid needs no real introduction or explanation for why he should be in Injustice as a playable character instead of just his cameo appearance. Darkseid could easily be one of if not the most powerful character in the DC Universe, I mean lets face it the Omega Beam is beastly and if it wasn’t for Orion (that’s a whole other story for another time) and everyone teaming together I’m sure Darkseid would have just destroyed everyone in DC and then sit back on his throne and enjoy a cup of tea. What I’m trying to say is Darkseid doesn’t need a reason to be in Injustice he should just be there instead of his cameo appearance. I’ll put it to you this way, Thanos from the Marvel Universe is like how Darkseid is for DC.

I mean really? Do I need to go into the details as to why Bizarro would be great in this game? First off he is awesome and the anti-Superman since he has the opposing powers (i.e flame breath, freeze vision, and vacuum breath) also he is hilarious depending on which version they would hypothetically use as the mute Bizarro was more annoying then anything compared to the more motor functional Bizarro who was an ally with Solomon Grundy. Also they could include an alternate skin of the younger teenage theme Bizarro that was in the Superboy comics when he first made his appearance.

Black Manta

I think it’s only fair that since most of the heroes have their archenemies in the game that Aquaman should have his greatest foe included as well, and since Aquaman has only recently finally gotten any form of popularity (post Blackest Night story line) I think that  Black Manta is an excellent choice to put in the game as he really doesn’t have any power besides his suit that allows him to function underwater and gives him super strength he is a gadget man like Batman and he would be a great addition as most of the villains that are non-metahumans are basically Batman related or Lex Luthor.

Plus he has lots of weapons, and they are cool.

We can debate all day about who’s faster: Superman or The Flash but what Injustice lacks is another speed character and who better than the Reverse-Flash sure he’s basically the same exact character as The Flash except the red and yellow colors are reversed (which makes sense) but it would be nice to see some more villains for the other heroes included in the game. That’s the only real reason why I would love to see Reverse-Flash in the game, honestly I’d be fine if Captain Cold was included instead.

Zatanna is a female character that I think should be included in the game hands down, not just because she brings balance to the types of heroes in the game since she is a magician both in stage performance and in her actual abilities. Also when you look at the female roster in the game alone it’s very lacking and there are plenty of female DC characters that would be cool to play as in the game. Also it might be a bit fanboyish but I’ve been a Zatanna fan since the Identity Crisis mini-series where she mind wiped someone with her magic, I think it was Dr. Light I could be wrong so I’ll check the DC database later on. And lastly Zatanna is one of the more popular DC cosplays for reasons I have shouldn’t have to state and she is more popular as a character than I think DC realizes.

Injustice features Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) both honing the power of the green power ring and the yellow, and the game also has Sinestro in all his yellow glory as well but there is another key player that I think would be a great inclusion that not only has his own ring and corps but given his brute strength and “rage” would make a great bruiser type character like Bane or Doomsday. I am of course talking about Atrocitus, founder of the Red Lantern Corps who hone the power of Rage. I realize that Atrocitus would most likely just be a fan service character like Booster Gold but I think that the addition of another big powerhouse character wouldn’t be a bad thing and if I had to choose the character I wouldn’t think twice with going with Atrocitus.

Last up we have Cheetah, one of the main villains for Wonder Woman throughout the years, I should first off state that I would prefer the Barbara Minerva version of the Cheetah instead of the first and only male version Sebastian as that was just weird and seemed like a knock off of  Marvel’s Sabertooth. Given the fact that her only real powers are that she’s agile and has some speed to her I think she would be another character that could play like The Flash and it would be nice to recreate some of the epic battles she had with Wonder Woman. I don’t really have much more to say about Cheetah, I’m not a big fan of her but at the same time I feel like she should have been in the game.

Now these are just a few of the characters I would like to see, more or less because their counterparts are already in the game and also because they are villains or heroes that I think if given a spot in the game could easily bring some new fans to their comic books or story and get more interest in them. With all that being said this is my list of characters I would have loved to see included in Injustice: Gods Among Us, and who knows maybe there will be more DLC in the future that adds more characters and we could see one or two of them appear in the game.
